The Key to Decluttering and Your Better Life

At One Coast Design, we believe that creating a beautifully functional home with soul goes beyond aesthetics…it’s about crafting spaces that support your lifestyle and well-being. A key aspect of interior design is also understanding how clutter and storage impact your daily life. I had no idea my yacht design background would someday help me with residential homes and storage solutions. I can help you, too!
In this blog, we’ll explore the importance of the ‘traffic-flow’ of your home. I’m going to share built-in storage solution ideas and how they can help you declutter, and I will show you how I drew inspiration from The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning by Margareta Magnusson – it’s not as morbid as it sounds, I promise!
As I guide you through the process of decluttering and getting organized, the design of your home becomes…magical. A functional home that feels both serene and stylish is what we’re aiming for…right this way!
Sometimes maintaining a clutter-free home feels like a never-ending challenge. I call it ‘pick-up patrol.’
I always say, ‘Design isn’t good if it doesn’t work for you’! Embracing efficient built-in storage solutions can make a huge difference in transforming your spaces.
When I recently read, The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning (I didn’t want to touch it but, I was intrigued!) highlighted within was the importance of decluttering for today and the future.
This approach highlights how thoughtful design and well-planned storage can create lasting harmony in your home.
To be frank, again, I reluctantly selected this book to read, thinking it might be morbid, but I was very surprised to find so many gems about life here! So glad I stuck it out.
Why Built-ins Matter in Decluttering
When dealing with clutter, the underlying problem often isn’t just the stuff…it’s the lack of proper storage.
Built-ins offer an elegant solution by seamlessly blending function and design. Instead of cramming items into overcrowded drawers or closets, built-ins provide dedicated spaces for everything, reducing clutter and chaos…and enjoying your pretty stuff!
Built-ins can be customized to fit your lifestyle, making organizing and accessing what you need easier, without overwhelming your space. Whether it’s the living room, bedroom, or kitchen, these storage solutions create a sense of order and peace…not to mention, looking super chic while doing it!
"A loveD one wishes to inherit nice things from you...Not all things from you."
Margareta Magnusson

The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning: A New Perspective on Decluttering
The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning introduces a thoughtful way to approach decluttering, urging the reader to reflect on what they truly need. It’s so not about throwing things away impulsively but about considering what you want to keep for the future.
This method aligns beautifully with built-ins, as they provide storage for the essentials while encouraging you to minimize unnecessary possessions. Built-ins, paired with this mindset, ensure your home remains functional yet minimalist!
How Clutter Reflects Emotional Struggles
Clutter isn’t just a physical burden, it can symbolize emotional and psychological hurdles. Whether it’s fear of change (a big hidden reason), attachment to the past, or uncertainty about the future, clutter manifests in many ways.
Built-in storage allows you to reclaim control by providing dedicated spaces for your belongings. With the ability to organize and display items intentionally, built-ins help you focus on the beautiful present rather than being weighed down by old, unused possessions that make you feel burdened or disappointed.
Storage Solutions for Every Room
Different rooms in the house can benefit from custom-built storage solutions that provide order and purpose.
Here are a few ideas to consider:
- Living Room Built-ins: Custom shelving and cabinets help organize books you actually want to keep and decorative items, leaving no room for clutter. The key is to create a visually pleasing and functional space for everything you use or can enjoy regularly.
- Bedroom Built-ins: Integrating built-in closets, shelving, and even under-bed storage ensures your clothes, shoes, and accessories are neatly stored. Culling the herd and putting everything in its place eliminates the need for additional bulky furniture and enhances the feeling of calm. Streamlining does wonders for your brain!
- Kitchen Storage Solutions: Pantries, organized pull-out drawers, and overhead cabinets are essential for keeping your kitchen pulled together. Proper kitchen storage also reflects a focus on wellness, where clutter-free countertops promote a healthier, more efficient and creative cooking environment.
- Office Space: Custom desks, integrated filing cabinets, and properly lit shelving units keep your work area tidy, boosting productivity and minimizing distractions. You’ll enjoy getting to work in there!
