Where Charleston Meets California: Discover Coastal Scandifornia

Reimagining Coastal Style: Meet Coastal 'Scandifornia'

When these lovely clients approached us, they had not yet moved to our area, but they knew they wanted the Lowcountry ‘Coastal’ feel while retaining some of their personal West Coast style!

One Coast Design embraces every coastline’s vibe – and finding this client couple’s version of coastal on the East Coast was at the forefront of their design dream!

Refreshing the timeless appeal of coastal interiors for our clients is smack dab in our wheelhouse. The classic blue-and-white palette, breezy textures, and sun-kissed elegance have long-defined coastal homes. And for those who love the effortless charm of coastal decor yet crave a touch of minimalism as these clients did, there’s a new design direction to explore—enter Coastal ‘Scandifornia.’

Blending the organic warmth of California’s West Coast vibe with the clean simplicity of Scandinavian design, this hybrid aesthetic is making waves now. A refined approach that steers away from clichés offers a fresh way to bring serenity, sophistication, and a sense of place into any space.

At One Coast Design, we love how this trend layers natural elements, timeworn textures, and sculptural forms, crafting interiors that feel soulful and inviting.

And the wife’s love of the color gold was a fun addition to their coastal palette! It’s an exciting curveball not usually found front and center in a coastal palette, but we love a little out-of-the-ordinary color combination – it makes their design personal!

Before After

"We moved here from the west coast and found Michelle and her team!
I absolutely love the final outcome after working with Michelle and the One Coast Design team. I appreciated all of their hard work from initial design concept to finish and couldn’t be happier with the results. It's so wonderful to come home to my gorgeous new, fully designed home!"

What Is Coastal Scandifornia?

A true fusion of two beloved styles, Coastal Scandifornia, takes the airy, relaxed essence of coastal living and pairs it with the understated elegance of Scandinavian minimalism. Think soothing palettes, natural materials, and an effortless blend of textures that exude warmth without excess.

This trend moves beyond predictable nautical motifs and turquoise accents. Instead, it embraces soft utility—functional, beautiful, and timeless pieces that evoke a curated, lived-in feel. We picture weathered woods, breezy linens, handwoven textures, and just a hint of muted, coastal-inspired colors for the mood of this client.

Rather than being a direct nod to the ocean, Coastal Scandifornia is inspired by the entire landscape—from windswept dunes and rocky cliffs to ‘golden-hour hues’ and deep blues for that layered watery feel. And these clients wanted us to amp up the gold in ‘golden hour’ as you can see! They loooove their spaces!

How to Achieve the Coastal Scandifornia Look

1. Draw Inspiration from Natural Landscapes

Instead of defaulting to maritime stripes and overt beachy themes, let the broader coastal environment guide your design choices. Soft neutrals, sandy beiges, and earthy greens pull from nature’s palette, creating spaces that feel calm, effortless, and infinitely livable.

At One Coast Design, we often incorporate materials that echo their surroundings—sisal or jute rugs for an organic foundation, linen-upholstered furniture that invites you to sink in, and subtle washes of sage, seafoam, or golden ochre that reference the ever-changing horizon.

2. Curate a Soothing, Nuanced Palette

Rather than the brighter blues and stark whites traditionally linked to coastal design, Coastal Scandifornia leans into more nuanced hues—misty grays, sun-faded terracottas, and warm ochres that shift beautifully with the light. The key is restraint—color should complement the textures and materials rather than overpower them.

A pro tip: Instead of relying solely on color to define the space, layer in visual interest through textiles, collected objects, and heirloom and vintage pieces like we did for these clients that tell their story!

3. Embrace Natural Materials with Character

Raw, imperfect materials anchor this aesthetic and introduce an organic, chic richness. Reclaimed wood, honed stone, woven rattan, and hand-thrown ceramics all bring a tactile depth to the space, creating a look that is as textural as it is timeless.

We love sourcing vintage finds—whether it’s a timeworn wooden bench, a ceramic vessel with an aged patina, or a seagrass basket that adds subtle contrast. It’s these elements that soften the clean lines of Scandinavian minimalism, making a home feel warm and personal.

4. Layer in Textures for Depth and Warmth

To keep the space from feeling too pristine or spare, layer in textures that enhance the sense of coziness. Picture a hand-knotted wool rug underfoot, gauzy linen curtains that filter the light just so, or a boucle armchair that invites you to stay awhile.

And don’t forget the power of statement decor—whether it’s a sculptural light fixture, an abstract coastal-inspired painting, or a stack of well-loved books that add instant personality.

The magic of Coastal Scandifornia lies in the balance—where every piece feels considered yet effortlessly placed.

Bringing Coastal Scandifornia Home

At One Coast Design, we believe in designing spaces that feel collected, not decorated—where every detail tells a story and every piece contributes to the home’s overall harmony. Coastal Scandifornia is the perfect embodiment of this philosophy, seamlessly blending airy elegance with grounded minimalism and a touch of personality woven in.

Whether you’re drawn to its relaxed, sun-drenched feel or its ability to create a retreat-like atmosphere year-round, this trend offers a fresh way to embrace coastal living.

Here in Charleston, it’s all about refinement, restraint, thoughtfulness, and the kind of effortless beauty that feels just right…for you!
