When we first walked into this historic Charleston Single, it was clear the kitchen needed a fresh chapter. The bones were there—original heart pine floors, tall ceilings, and just enough quirks to remind you of the home’s storied past. But like many older Lowcountry kitchens, it lacked the flow, light, and function today’s families crave. Our goal wasn’t to erase the past. It was to thoughtfully reimagine it—blending modern livability with the relaxed elegance of coastal kitchen design…we love a blend!
From thoughtful storage solutions to breezy textures and timeless finishes, this kitchen now tells a new story while honoring the old one. Every finish, fixture, and flourish was chosen to help this coastal kitchen design feel both fresh and familiar…without removing all the traces of its glorious past.
When it comes to renovating a historic home, the magic lies in the balance—preserving the soul of the past while creating something effortlessly livable and updated for today. This kitchen renovation project is a prime example: rooted in coastal kitchen design with all the warmth and character of a classic Lowcountry cottage. ‘She’s small but mighty, I say’!
Today, we’re thrilled to share a deeper dive into one of our most cherished transformations: the historic kitchen renovation at the Coburn Hutchinson House, nestled in the heart of downtown Summerville, SC.
Historic Home, Modern Function
As with many older Charleston area homes, this kitchen didn’t come with much in the way of storage. In smaller Charleston singles, heck, most of them, there is a lack of storage as a rule.
If there had been a pantry, it would have been small.
In true Charleston Single fashion, storage was at a premium. No pantry. No modern cabinetry, per se, and a bit of a hodge-podge…she really wants to be fully symmetrical. The bones were there, but a bit of a blank canvas with loads of potential.
Rather than forcing in oversized storage or clunky additions, we worked with the scale and footprint of the space to incorporate built-in cabinetry that feels original to the home.
We designed cupboards that echo the feel of traditional paneling, an intentional nod to how people lived when this home was first built. These creative kitchen updates in a historic home allowed us to prioritize both form and function, without compromising the kitchen’s vintage soul.

That’s the beauty of coastal kitchen design: it never tries too hard. It leans into available natural light, unfussy materials, and classic elements that only get better with age.
Here’s how we brought that vision of a classic, breezy coastal kitchen design to life:
- White shaker cabinetry with a raised panel for subtle detail
- Heart Pine Countertop surfaces, balancing texture and tone with the flooring
- Unlacquered brass hardware that patinas beautifully over time
- Polished brass, stone and porcelain accents for a hint of shine and contrast
- Subway tile backsplash, clean and classic with staying power
These layers work together to build a kitchen that’s grounded, elegant, and refreshingly ‘trend-free’!
Kitchen Arches
One of the most defining elements in the new kitchen is the graceful archway between the dining room and the kitchen. Not only does it visually connect two distinct ceiling heights, but it also introduces one of our favorite kitchen design elements: subtle architectural curves that soften and frame a space without overwhelming it.
The arched entry into the kitchen is more than just a pretty feature—it’s a thoughtful design solution.
That archway isn’t just aesthetically pleasing; it gently frames the kitchen from both sides while also transitioning between two ceiling heights: the more intimate dining room and the lighter palette of the kitchen space. We love echoing architectural traditions while connecting directly to our coastal interior architecture ethos by repeating elements.
Whether it’s ornamented trim or a simple curve, every detail was carefully considered to feel authentic and not gratuitously added on…this home was always a more casual style home, but the high ceilings give it a certain stature and airiness that stole our hearts.
This arch became a symbol of the kitchen transformation. A simple design move with a big impact, it now anchors the transition from dining to cooking—and brings a sense of charm that feels right at home in a coastal kitchen design.

We honored original beadboard ceilings and heart pine floors, while injecting breezy coastal style into every corner of this coastal kitchen design…remember, ‘coastal’ is a feeling!
Delicate architectural details inform this kitchen arch!
We preserved yet refined the existing archway, maintaining its old-world character by adding a few details that pay homage to the time period and overall relaxed grandeur of the pass-through.
Beadboard ceiling!
Upon further inspection, with the assistance of a historical conservator who agreed to visit us, we found that the beadboard was indeed the original beadboard of the porch ceiling. Nothing goes to waste here, and its age-old charm was enhanced with a fresh coat of paint, creating a luminous, airy feel.
Timeless kitchen finishes
White shaker/raised panel cabinet doors, brass hardware, and timeless yet cheeky lighting anchor the design. And did you see the fully restored heart-pine countertops? Skullery vibes in this house, yes, please.
Subtle coastal hues
Soft neutrals nod to elegant cottage coastal living without overpowering the space or making it boring…glossy lettuce-edged subway tile with a soft beige grout makes for a very usable space that you can see the entire length of this Charleston Single home.
Styling This Coastal Historic Kitchen
We love styling infused with gentle coastal energy:
- Potted greenery & brass accents on wood countertops and the center table.
- Coastal hand-painted neutral fabrics on window treatments and seat cushions.
- Vintage pieces include a brass teaholder, a cut-crystal creamer to hold silver spoons, beveled glass doors displaying dishes and glassware, and woven jute rugs. (No glass shelves due to the proximity to the railway – talk about noise makers!)
- Daily-life warmth—hand towels, bowls for fruit, ceramic pitchers ready for everyday use
